WEDDING IN SOLAR DA LEVADA
BRAGA. PORTUGAL
JENNIFER & SERGEY
A Jewish destination wedding at one of Portugal's most poetic estates.
Two days of celebration across Porto and Braga, Jewish ceremony beneath the chuppah, and a fountain lit by fireworks just before midnight.
A Jewish destination wedding spread across two days and two corners of Northern Portugal. One hundred and eighteen guests flew in from across the United States and Europe to celebrate, beginning with a welcome dinner in Vila Nova de Gaia and ending the following night with fireworks above the fountains at Solar da Levada.
The bride wore Saint Salome by Lovely Bride. The dress code was black tie. The June light over the estate fell low and gold, the kind only Northern Portugal knows in early summer.
The ceremony carried the full weight of Jewish tradition. Beneath a chuppah set in front of Solar da Levada's grand fountains, Jennifer walked to Sergey with her parents on either side. The ketubah had been signed earlier, witnessed by both families. When Sergey broke the glass, the guests roared mazel tov. The fountain caught the late light. Everyone wept and cheered in the same breath.
The reception ran on its own gravity. The hora lifted Jennifer and Sergey above a sea of raised hands. Speeches came in waves between courses. Just before midnight the entire party moved outside to the fountain again, where the cake was cut and fireworks lit the granite walls. The dance floor stayed full until 1:30 AM, the way only the best ones do.

Solar Da Levada
Is a piece of Northern Portugal's living history.
Step inside one of Northern Portugal's most captivating estates, where historic stone meets contemporary design.
Solar da Levada is an 18th-century Minho manor house in the village of Prozelo, in the parish of Amares, set on the gates of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in the greenest corner of Northern Portugal. Rather than demolish what remained of the original estate, the main hall was raised within the ruins themselves, the old granite walls left to converse with contemporary windows.
What makes Solar da Levada extraordinary for a wedding is its range. The grounds carry a setting for every hour of the day, the grand stone facade at noon, the fountain at sunset, the glass dining room when the candles come on. Ponds, waterfalls, formal gardens, a chapel and the manor itself, all within one private property, all woven together so the celebration moves from ceremony to cocktail hour to dinner without leaving the estate.
Twenty-five minutes from Braga, less than an hour from Porto airport, but a world apart from either. Having photographed at Solar da Levada many times, we can say there is no other venue in Northern Portugal quite like it.
Day One took place at Vinha Boutique Hotel
Set high on the south bank of the Douro just outside Porto, Vinha Boutique Hotel is a quiet winery estate in Vila Nova de Gaia, known for its gardens and its glass-roofed greenhouse pavilion. Guests gathered outside for an open bar as the sun moved off the river, then walked together into the greenhouse for dinner, the walls open to the gardens on every side, the candlelight low, the conversation easy.
It was the kind of welcome dinner that lets a destination wedding begin the way it should, with no rush and no formality, just two families finally in the same place after months of planning across an ocean.
