Queluz is the palace couples send us before they have even chosen a date. Pastel façades, clipped Baroque gardens, mirrored halls with checkerboard floors, and a Throne Room lit by chandeliers. Yet once the gates close behind your guests it feels like a private royal estate. We have photographed many weddings here, including Reed and Sueraya's, published in British Vogue, and Carlos and Gabriella's in September 2026. This guide is what those days taught us.
We are Vadim and Irina Pastuh, a husband-and-wife team of destination wedding photographers based in Lisbon. Two photographers, two points of view, one calm presence on your day. See more of our weddings in Portugal.
Palácio Nacional de Queluz is an 18th-century royal palace in Queluz, between Lisbon and Sintra, about 20 minutes from Lisbon city center and from Lisbon airport. It is managed by Parques de Sintra. For weddings it offers the formal gardens and the ceremonial façade for the ceremony, the Ambassadors Room, the Music Room, the Robillon staircase and terraces, and the Throne Room, the largest hall in the palace, for dinner.
Queluz Palace at a glance: gardens, mirrored halls and the Throne Room
Queluz was built as a summer residence for the royal family in the 18th century, and for a wedding it works as a sequence of rooms and gardens rather than one space. The gardens and the ceremonial façade are the classic setting for the ceremony, with hedges, statues and fountains around you. The Ambassadors Room, with its mirrors, painted ceiling and black and white marble floor, is our favorite room in Portugal for group and family portraits. The Music Room and the quieter halls are perfect for a first look or a portrait away from the crowd. The gardens and the Robillon staircase hold the cocktail hour, and the Throne Room, built around 1770, holds dinner under the chandeliers.
A real Queluz Palace wedding timeline
Carlos and Gabriella got ready at The One Palácio da Anunciada in Lisbon. This is the timeline we built with them and their planner for a September wedding:
- 12:00Getting ready at the hotel in Lisbon
- 13:15First look at the hotel, fifteen minutes, just the two of you
- 14:30Couple and bridal party arrive at Queluz. One hour of portraits inside the palace
- 15:30Family arrives. Forty-five minutes of family portraits in the Ambassadors Room
- 17:30Ceremony in the gardens
- 18:30Cocktail hour in the gardens
- 20:00Sunset. Fifteen minutes of golden hour portraits with us
- 20:30Dinner in the Throne Room: first dance, speeches, parents' dances
- 22:30The party: cake cutting and dancing
Why this order works: in the middle of the day the sun over the gardens is harsh, and the venue team is still setting up the ceremony. Doing the portraits inside the palace before the ceremony gives you soft, even light and calm, and leaves the cocktail hour free for your guests.

The Ambassadors Room before the guests
Window light, mirrors and the checkerboard floor. Big groups fit, nobody squints, and every face is lit evenly.
The Robillon staircase
Pale stone against a blue sky, and the staircase with its lions gives a frame that is pure Queluz.
The gardens in the last light
In September the sun sets around 20:00, so the fifteen minutes before dinner are the best of the day for portraits in the gardens.
The façade after dark
Once the palace is lit, the pale façade becomes the backdrop for the party, and blue hour gives one of the most striking photographs of the night.
Dinner in the Throne Room and a party in the palace
Dinner in the Throne Room is the moment most couples choose Queluz for: gilded mirrors, chandeliers, long tables and candlelight. Carlos and Gabriella turned the night into a masquerade, with masks for the guests and an LED show on the dance floor. Reed and Sueraya took part of the celebration outside, under the lit façade, with Afghan music and dance that filled the gardens. The palace holds both a formal dinner and a real party.
“A palace by day, a masquerade by night.”
Planning a Queluz Palace wedding from abroad
- Getting there. Lisbon airport is about 20 minutes away. Most couples and guests stay in Lisbon and come to Queluz by shuttle. Sintra is close by, for a welcome dinner or a day after.
- Getting ready. Carlos and Gabriella got ready in Lisbon. With a large bridal party and traffic, their timeline allowed 45 minutes for the drive.
- A national monument. Queluz is managed by Parques de Sintra and has its own rules for events. The palace can also be used for state events, which take priority over private bookings, so work with a planner who knows Queluz.
- Planner. Carlos and Gabriella worked with First Class Concierge.
- Two photographers. With an 18-person bridal party, family portraits, guests in the gardens and the dinner setup happening at once, we always work as a team of two.
- The whole weekend. Many couples add a welcome dinner and a pool party. Carlos and Gabriella had both, at Palácio da Anunciada and at Camélia Gardens in Sintra, and we photographed all three days.
Two weddings at Queluz Palace
Carlos and Gabriella, September 2026
A three-day celebration: a welcome cocktail in white at Palácio da Anunciada, a pool party at Camélia Gardens in Sintra, and the wedding at Queluz, with a ceremony in the gardens, dinner in the Throne Room and a masquerade with an LED show. Planned by First Class Concierge.
Reed and Sueraya, published in British Vogue
An Afghan-American wedding over two days: a sunset welcome at Forte da Crismina above Guincho beach, then the wedding at Queluz, with the palace as the backdrop for the ceremony, dinner in a golden hall and a night of Afghan music and dance.
